Perfect Bars
Bill and Leigh Keith grew up in an extraordinary way—traveling the country in a school bus with their parents and ten siblings. Their father created a homemade energy concoction made from peanut butter, honey, and supplements, rolling them into bite-sized snacks to fuel the family during their travels. When the family encountered financial hardship, the older siblings saw an opportunity: they decided to sell their home and bet everything on commercializing their family recipe into a refrigerated energy bar product.
The Keith family took a grassroots approach to getting their product to market. They hand-rolled millions of Perfect Bars and launched a sampling campaign at festivals and grocery stores throughout Northern California. This direct-to-consumer tasting strategy proved effective, generating word-of-mouth momentum and retail interest. Their persistence and product quality eventually caught the attention of major retailers.
Perfect Bars achieved distribution across the country's largest retailers, including Whole Foods and Costco. The family's bet paid off spectacularly—in 2019, the company was acquired by Mondelēz International, one of the world's largest snack food manufacturers.
