Nova.ai is a seed-stage AI sales product that helps SDRs and AEs write highly personalized sales emails in seconds, with a list price of $150 per seat. Founded in 2015 after YC, it had about 100 customers and roughly 1,000 seats in use at the time of the interview, with reported (host-estimated, not confirmed) MRR around $150K.

Why They Built It

Will Dinkel ran enterprise sales at Cloudflare and saw how effective manual sales personalization was, but also how hard it was to scale, measure, and track across a team. He wanted software that could do it.

Why It Worked
  • •Charging per seat while selling to sales teams means revenue scales directly with customer adoption, and the shift toward 15-20 seat enterprise deals raises ARPU without new logos.
  • •Using its own product for its SDR team (20-30 appointments a week) turns the company into its own best case study, which makes sales conversations more credible.
  • •Positioning against manual tools like mail merge and Yesware, rather than competing on feature breadth, frames the category as a 'land grab' where the main competitor is doing nothing.
  • •Deliberately moving up-market from SMB teams to larger deals changed the revenue profile, which points to founder-led enterprise selling as a strong early engine.
How to Replicate
  • 1.Start with a pain you have personally felt inside a sales or operations workflow, and validate that the manual version is effective but hard to scale.
  • 2.Price per seat at a clear list price (here $150/month), then let deal sizes grow by targeting larger teams with more reps.
  • 3.Use your own product in your internal SDR and AE process so you can show real booking results to prospects.
  • 4.Position against the status quo tools your buyers already use (mail merge, sales engagement tools) and focus on the one capability competitors do not have.
  • 5.Test paid acquisition only after the outbound motion works, starting with a small monthly budget to measure results.
