Egbert Usberg launched OpenSky, a discovery app for drone pilots that shows where they can fly and where others are flying nearby, plus planned insurance products. At the time of the interview the app was pre-revenue, with just under 100 pre-launch beta sign-ups and a seed round of just under $100,000. The founder projected about $50k in revenue for the following quarter, but that was a forecast, not actual income.

Why They Built It

Existing drone apps mostly show where pilots cannot fly, such as the FAA's restricted zones around airports and heliports. OpenSky was built to also show where pilots can fly and who is flying nearby.
