Vincent Dignan didn't start out as a growth hacking expert. Three years before this interview, he was on welfare benefits—broke and desperate to grow a company. That desperation became his superpower. Instead of relying on vague business advice about "authentic relationships" and "engaging content," he obsessed over actual tactics that worked: finding email addresses, discovering common connections, and automating follow-ups. He realized that most marketers deliberately obscured the real mechanics because they wanted you to fail and hire them. He decided to do the opposite.

Building the First Version

Vincent completed Techstar's London accelerator and scaled two websites to over one million visitors per month. His growth hacking talk was voted best workshop at South by Southwest in Las Vegas, proving his methods worked at scale. He built Magnific as a boutique agency, assembling a network of over 750 writers, editors, and marketers that he could mobilize for clients. But he kept his client roster small and selective—only a handful of high-value relationships paying $5,000-$10,000 per month for direct consulting work where he'd find their ideal users and bring them early traffic.

What Worked (and What Didn't)

Vincent discovered that the real bottleneck for startups wasn't product-market fit—plenty of founders could build. It was traffic. He positioned himself as the traffic expert and commanded premium consulting fees. He shared his playbook freely through talks, interviews, and Twitter (175,000 followers), which created a steady stream of inbound leads. The tools he championed—Charlie App, Email Hunter, Discover.ly, Profile Hopper, Rebump—became his signature. He didn't take equity from clients despite frequent offers, reasoning that power laws meant he'd need to back dozens of companies to hit one breakout winner. His time was better spent serving a small number of paying clients well and teaching the broader market through content and speaking.

Where They Are Now

Vincent is transitioning from pure agency consulting toward productizing his knowledge. He's launching "The Growth Hacking Playbook" on Kickstarter to reach a wider audience and shift toward teaching rather than doing. He runs a publishing operation at a velocity of one to two articles per day (interview show notes converted into longer-form content), and uses his email list of 50,000 and Twitter following to drive distribution. He remains selective about consulting work, focusing on clients willing to test and execute rather than endlessly optimize before launch.
