Jeff Bullis was fascinated by the emerging power of social media about six years before this August 2015 interview. Driven by passionate curiosity, he started a blog to share his observations and insights about social media's impact on humans in the digital world. What began as a passion project would eventually transform into a full-time business.
Jeff's early approach was disciplined but evolved. He initially posted content a couple of times a week, but realized that to break through the clutter of "one billion websites and counting," he needed to be far more persistent. For about eight or nine months, he created five blog posts a week without missing a day—essentially hitting "full throttle like a jet aircraft taking off."
He started as a night writer but pivoted to a grueling routine: waking up at 4:30 AM every morning to write before his day job at a digital agency specializing in websites and e-commerce sites. He maintained this schedule for about four years while working full-time. His passion for the intersection of his interests—marketing, technology, and writing—became the fuel that made this relentless pace sustainable.
Revenue came organically and almost accidentally. Jeff received an invitation to speak at a conference in Italy, and they were willing to pay him. "That was a wake-up call," he recalled. "I asked them, 'How do you know who I am? I'm just a blogger from Australia.' They said, 'Well, we see you everywhere.'" They paid him around $5,000 USD.
As speaking invitations multiplied, Jeff became so busy traveling and speaking that his full-time employer asked him to go part-time. In his own words, he "slowly fired himself" by being distracted by his blog—a bootstrapping strategy that worked perfectly.
By August 2015, Jeff had achieved remarkable traction: 250,000 unique website impressions per month, 70,000 email subscribers, and 350,000 Twitter followers. His speaking fees had grown from $5,000 to $10,000 per engagement.
But Jeff evolved beyond speaking. He realized the real scalability came from digital products and affiliate marketing. He sold eBooks, online courses, and promoted other training products he knew and trusted (like LinkedIn and social media courses, as well as Aweber affiliate links). When he sent a single email to his 70,000-person list promoting a product, he could generate thousands of dollars—sometimes $10,000 or more—depending on the product and campaign length. His favorite tool became Infusionsoft, his marketing automation platform, which enabled him to scale his marketing efforts.
After 18 months of full-time focus on content creation and marketing, Jeff had completely transitioned from his agency job. His revenue streams were now diversified across speaking engagements, affiliate commissions, digital product sales, and email campaigns. He had moved from the constraint of trading time for money (speaking) into scalable digital products and list monetization. His blog had become a compounding asset—the consistent content creation of his early years had built authority, reach, and an engaged audience that could be monetized in multiple ways.
