Community Co / YEC
Ryan Pahl co-founded Brazen Careerist, a social network for Gen Y entrepreneurs and ambitious college students recognized by Mashable as one of the top social networks for its demographic. This early success in community building laid the foundation for understanding what ambitious professionals needed: access to their peers, curated resources, and opportunities to build social capital.
YEC (Young Entrepreneurs Council) became their flagship community, launching with a membership model charging annual dues. The company built proprietary technology to track member data and present opportunities in intelligent ways, but paired this with significant human touch—a concierge team that curated connections and recommendations for each member. This combination of technology and personalized service became the core philosophy.
With YEC, the company achieved remarkable traction: a 1,600-member organization with a 90%+ annual retention rate. The retention rate was the key metric that proved product-market fit. Building on this success, they launched Founder Society just over a year before this interview (around late 2014), charging $500 annually and reaching roughly 500 members by February 2016. All members were paying by that point, with early free members converted once the community was seeded.
The partnership approach proved highly effective. Forbes recognized the value of community and agreed to a joint venture to build 12 professional councils by the end of 2016. These included Technology Council, Coaches Council, Nonprofit Council, Agency Council, and Legal Council—each charging $1,200 annually on a revenue-sharing basis. Ryan noted they were approaching thousands of total members across Forbes councils. The company also moved offline, hosting ski retreats (YEC Escape), intimate dinners in major cities, and national conferences, all of which strengthened retention and member value.
By early 2016, Community Co was generating substantial revenue across multiple community verticals. Founder Society alone contributed approximately $250,000 annually (500 members × $500). With thousands more in Forbes councils and the YEC membership base, the company supported 50+ employees. Ryan positioned the company as experts in translating online communities into offline experiences that deepened member engagement and business outcomes.
