The Spark

Chuck Marting spent 20 years in law enforcement, the last 18 as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and DUI Instructor. He became intimately familiar with employer drug testing needs when he noticed companies were hemorrhaging time and money. Employees and supervisors would spend hours waiting at clinics for drug tests while other emergencies took priority. When Chuck looked around his Colorado market, he realized no one was offering mobile drug testing services for employers—a clear gap just waiting to be filled.

Building the First Version

In January 2012, Chuck and his wife Stacy sat at their kitchen table and decided to build Colorado Mobile Drug Testing from scratch. Crucially, they didn't rush in blindly. They applied for a small business plan course offered by a local community college that accepted only 10 companies out of 55 applicants. This competition forced them to validate their idea and pitch it seriously. The business plan course paid off—Colorado Mobile Drug Testing placed second and won $8,000 in seed funding. Chuck used this prize to purchase supplies, products, and other company essentials. He and Stacy also leaned heavily on the Small Business Administration (SBA) for guidance, a resource many new entrepreneurs overlook but which Chuck credits as crucial to their success.

Finding the First Customers

In the early days, marketing was postcards and basic internet ads. Chuck tried to cut costs by building the company website himself, but the results were lackluster. Everything changed when he read Don Miller's "Building a Storybrand," which emphasizes clarifying your message. This revelation led him to hire a Storybrand-trained professional to rebuild the website. The impact was immediate and dramatic: "In the first month of launching it, inquiries into our services increased by 500%." Chuck also invested in Ray Edwards' Copywriting Academy to master email marketing and copywriting. Today, the company focuses on SEO and email marketing to drive growth.

Where They Are Now

Eight and a half years after launch, Colorado Mobile Drug Testing has grown to two brick-and-mortar offices—one in Fort Morgan covering Northern Colorado, and another in Denver just 5 miles west of Denver International Airport. Eighty percent of the business now comes from these physical offices rather than mobile services. The company is currently making $30,000 per month. Chuck has diversified into training and thought leadership, launching a podcast called "Clearing The Haze" to educate employers on recognizing drug impairment in the workplace. He's also hosting virtual summits to train entire business teams. His main disadvantage remains geographic—being Colorado-only limits his ability to serve multi-state companies. Chuck's biggest personal challenge has been work-life balance; joining a mastermind group with other entrepreneurs helped him address this. Looking ahead, he plans to open more offices in other regions while expanding the training side of the business.
