API Companies Using Community
Caitlin Gleason, a non-technical founder with a sales and healthcare background, started Eligible in 2012 after leaving Dr. Crono and going through Y Combinator. She bootstrapped on a credit line and her savings, built an API that shows patients their deductible and co-pay costs, and grew through a mix of direct provider outreach and Hacker News posts. The company later reached profitability and now processes billions of dollars in healthcare transactions per month.
Nylas, co-founded by Christine Spang, started as an effort to build a power-user email client but pivoted to a developer API that abstracts email, calendar, and contacts integration. The company launched its API as open source on GitHub, then moved to a per-connected-mailbox SaaS model, and now reports about 200 paying customers and revenue in the millions per year.
